6月4日、アメリカ合衆国ユタ州のブリガムヤング大学のPre-Med学生の実習を受け入れました。米国では医学部入学前に、大学の他学部を優秀な成績で卒業し、且つ数百時間の医療現場での実習・ボランティアや医師の診療同行の経験が必要となります。今回の4人は、過去に日本滞在経験などがあり、将来日本と米国の医療の架け橋になりたいと望み、日本の医療機関における実習プログラムに応募されました。
みな日本語が流暢で明るく礼儀正しい若者で、訪問を承諾くださった家庭で患者・ご家族さんから喜ばれ、スタッフからも好評でした。バイタル測定を手伝っていただく中、瞳の色の違うイケメンに血圧が高くなってしまったり、認知症の患者さん側からプチ英会話が始まって普段とは違う笑顔が出るなど、興味深い訪問となりました。
当院にとっても、普段私たちが行っているケアの質や意義について見つめ直す、素敵な機会になりました。

I was extremely impressed by the connection the doctors were able to make with their patients by visiting their houses and taking care of them. I could feel the joy from both the doctors and the patients.
「医師たちが患者さんの自宅を訪問し、ケアすることで築き上げてきた絆に、大変感銘を受けました。医師と患者さん双方から、喜びが伝わってきました。」
I remember one of the patients was reluctant to talk to the doctor and nurse. Despite this, they acted in a professional manner and responded well to the situation by asking if they could take her vital signs at the genkan. I was impressed by their quick-thinking in this situation, which reminded me that working in healthcare often requires adaptation to different situations.
「ある患者さんが、医師や看護師に話しかけるのをためらっていたのを覚えています。それでも、彼らはプロ意識を持って対応し、玄関でバイタルサインを測っても良いか尋ねるなど、状況に適切に対処していました。その機転の利いた対応に感心しました。医療現場では、様々な状況への適応力が求められることを改めて実感しました。」
he way the doctors and nurses interacted with the patients truly reminded me of why I wanted to pursue medicine.They personally knew each patient and expressed concern for them, laughing with them, empathizing with them, and working through their struggles with them.
「医師や看護師が患者さんと接する様子を見て、私が医学の道を志した理由を改めて思い出しました。 彼らは一人ひとりの患者さんのことをよく理解し、思いやりを示し、一緒に笑い、共感し、患者さんの苦しみに寄り添っていました。」
The most memorable part for me was the patience that the nurses exhibited. They dealt with a variety of issues throughout the day, but each time they did so with confidence in their abilities and awareness of the patients and their needs.
We all witnessed that every patient requires different care. The Himawari Clinic doctors and nurses clearly had this in mind and were able to give each patient the care that they needed. In the future, we would like to become health professionals who always have the individual in mind.
「私にとって最も印象的だったのは、看護師たちの忍耐強さでした。彼女たちは一日を通して様々な問題に対応していましたが、常に自信を持って、患者さん一人ひとりのニーズを理解し、対応していました。
私たちは皆、患者一人ひとりに必要なケアが異なることを目の当たりにしました。ひまわりクリニックの医師や看護師の方々は、まさにそのことを念頭に置いており、患者一人ひとりに必要なケアを提供できていました。私たちも将来、常に患者一人ひとりを思いやる医療従事者になりたいと願っています。」
